EYELID TWITCHING | OMENS, SUPERSTITIONS OR EYE DISEASES.
Different cultures all over the world have different beliefs about eyelid twitching and whether this might be a sign of good or bad omen, superstitious beliefs, or some severe calamities to come??? It’s a big NO.
Eyelid twitching is not, in fact, a sign of doom but instead can be caused by the following different conditions: –
1. MYOKMIA: – It is a benign condition that results in the twitching of the outer corner of the eyelid. It’s a temporary condition often brought on by stress, overconsumption of stimulants such as caffeine, fatigue and eye strain. The good part is that it goes away spontaneously when the causative factor is removed.
2. BLEPHAROSPASM:- it is involuntary, sustained and forceful closure of the eyelids. Due to reflex sensory stimulation through branches of the 5th nerve, in conditions like- phlyctenular keratitis, interstitial keratitis, corneal foreign body, corneal ulcers and iridocyclitis.
- Occasionally, it impacts the lower facial muscles and, in extreme cases, even the vocal cords.
- it worsens when your eyes are exposed to bright lights and can also be brought on by stress.
- it may cause-
- Watering of Eyes
- Oedema
- Spastic Entropion
- Blepharophimosis
- It is a lifelong condition, and treatment includes-
- botulinum toxin injections every three months to paralyse the muscles that close the eyelids.
- facial denervation.
3. HEMIFACIAL SPASM: – It results in involuntary spasms of one side of the face, including the eyelids, cheeks, and mouth. The cause is most often unknown, but rarely an enlarged blood vessel or tumour near the brainstem may be the underlying issue.
